King's College London was founded in 1829, by the Duke of Wellington, and has been in "service of society" ever since. It is my privilege to serve as the President & Principal of King's since 2021. I got here after a four decade academic journey that started at the All India Insitute of Medical Sciences New Delhi in 1982, and weaving its way through Pittsburgh, Toronto and Melbourne finally brought me to back to London. In this journey across continents, I am immensely grateful to my dedicated teachers and mentors and it has been an honour to work with some of the brightest and most passionate colleagues and students all over the world. My initial focus was in academic psychiatry, with a particular interest in schizophrenia and neuroscience. I spent over two decades improving the treatments for schizophrenia using brain imaging and clinical trials. This work led to over 350 publications cited over 65,000 times, an H-index of over 120 and honours and recognition from peers. Since the mid-2000s, I have taken on increasingly senior roles in academic leadership: first, as the Vice President for Research at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, University of Toronto. Then, as Executive Dean of the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neurosciences (IoPPN) and as an Assistant Principal (Academic Performance) at King’s College London (2007-2016). During that time I had the pleasure of serving as a non-executive Director of the SLaM NHS Foundation Trust, while also leading NewMeds, an EU-wide Innovative Medicines Initiative. In 2016, I moved to Australia to serve as the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences (MDHS) and Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Health) at the University of Melbourne. I also had the privilege to serve as a non-Executive Director of several of Australia's leading research Institutes as well as Chairing the Melbourne Academic Health Sciences partnership (MACH) and serving as the Co-Chair of the Million Minds Mission (an Australian Government Initiative). It was a great privilege to return to London, in 2021, to assume the position of President & Principal of King's College London.
